Brickhills wins award from Swimathon organisers

lesleyphoto 1aHelen S and I went to the Swimathon presentation last night. The swimathon raised £25,000. It was very touching to see the awards and cheques given out to the various causes. Big pat on the back to The Rotary Club of Milton Keynes.

We were awarded the 'Rotary Interclub Trophy' a small silver cup. I will bring it along to the President's Night so Nigel can announce our collective achievement together.

Well done everyone!

Rotary Annual Gala 2014

RAG 14 014 RAG 14 011

The Rotary Annual Gala event held by all the clubs in the Milton Keynes this year was hosted in the Chrysalis Theatre in Willen. Once again we saw the Court Theater players from Tring perform a Murder Mystery play written by Brickhills Rotary Club member Karen Banfield. The play this year was ‘Murder in the Manse’ set in 1910.

Our guests were invited to dress in costume of the period and many did. Guests ate a 2 course meal served by James Wyatt caterers. Sponsorship was also offered by three local businesses by way of product placement in the play and together with a very successful tombola we raised £1265 for three local charities, Young Carers Milton Keynes, and Buckingham and Leo's appeal in MK Hospital.

Some special guests were present, our District Governor Gavin Plews as can be seen here with a magnificent moustache, our District Governor Elect Jenni Muir and the local Member of Parliament Ian Stewart. All guests seemed to have a great evening, including our special guests even if they are not the greatest detectives, with none of the special guests guessing correctly.

Everyone had a great evening and some guests have booked the places already for next year

Treasure Hunt in Buckingham

buckingham treasureOn a bright but cold Sunday afternoon 20 of us met in Buckingham town centre to follow the Treasure Trail around this lovely old town, seeped in history.

We followed clues within our 'Spy document' and completed the mission grid and combination box in order to find the deactivation code!

A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon whilst learning and exercising at the same time!

Jaipur Dinner 2014

Jaipur141Jaipur143The Jaipur Dinner held at the Jaipur Restaurant MK is always a well attended fun night out. Over £3000 was raised from the dinner to go to support the Rotary Jaipur Limb Project. This project sponsors limb camps in Asia, Africa and Haiti providing new limbs to thousands of amputees.

A Jaipur limb costs £30 and is helping to give a positive life back to the many who are unable to walk. Thank you Newport Pagnell Rotary club for a well organized event.

Induction of a previous member

Alisons induction 2.2.14Brickhills Rotary Club inducted Alison Arnold into the fold last week. She was one of the founding members and has a long association with the club.

She is keen to participate along with service-minded men and women who are carrying out local volunteer work to support and fundraise for the community. She has her eyes set on the future direction of the club and hopes to lead from the front.

Welcome back.

MKGU Wine tasting evening

MKGU Winetasting night

Nine of us from the club attended the eveing held at MK Snap on the 7th Feb 2014. Split over two tables the evening was a wine 'call my bluff'. Six wines were tasted, 2 white, one sparkling, one rose and 2 reds.

Both our teams were entered in to the final as we scored fairly highly over the 'call my bluff' rounds. Both teams made it to the quarter final. Sadly just one of the teams made it to the final...but guess what - we won.

It was a great evening and Milton Keynes Grand Union Rotary Club rasied over £1000 for MK Snap, so a great result all round.

Toys for Indian Children

Sue Balgram RaiToys rUS editedBrickhills Rotary Club and Ousedale School students had a marvellous day out at Toys R Us, shopping for a joint project last week. Brickhills RC raised over £1000 for toys and educational items for the Balgram Rai Orphanage, India.

The Ousedale students will be flying out to New Delhi on a school exchange and will take the goodies with them to hand out to the separate houses within the orphanage.

Everyone is very excited and here’s hoping the aircraft will lift off with all the extra suitcases!

Well done everyone.

Santa Float Collections 2013

santa-Brickhillssantas elves

The Elves of the Rotary Club of the Brickhills helped to bring Santa to more homes this year than ever before. The Chief Elf and her committee planned 4 routes this year which included one new route in SE MK of Browns Wood.

Once again the residents of Bletchley and Newport Pagnell came out in force to say hello to Santa and to show their appreciation for him taking time out of his busy schedule to visit them by donating over £1300.00 to two worthy local charities Headway and Young Carers.

The meticulous planning by Chief Elf Helen R paid off as everything ran very smoothly. Well done everyone, with special thanks to Kevin and Darren ( you know why) :-).Roll on December when we can do it all over again.

Santa out and about in MK

santa and elveOnce again Santa has asked if we can help him visit some parts of Milton Keynes before the big night and we certainly couldn’t say no!

We will be visiting the Poets estate in Bletchley on Sunday 8th December, Newport Pagnell Poets estate on Sunday 15thDecember, taking a trip to parts of Old Farm Park & Browns Wood on Wednesday 18th December and our final trip for 2013 will be to roads on the Saints and Racecourses estates in Bletchley on Sunday 22nd December.

Santa likes to dance along on the float, so if you’re in these areas in the early evening, listen out for his approach.

The Winslow Show 2013

Lesley at the Winslow ShowFive members of the Brickhills club gave assistance to the Winslow Rotary Club on the August Bank Holiday weekend. The weather was really kind to the show this year and the people flocked into the field to see the traditional events held at a country show. This is the third successive year the club has helped out and we were pleased to do so.

Cakes and coffee for MacMillan-2013

The event was supported by many club members some who could not attend made cakes instead and all who took part really enjoyed themselves. Not withstanding the gorgeous cakes that are detrimantal to our waistlines we bought and ate them of course, there were even gluten free ones for Andrew.
