Newport News

GSE teams for 2012 to and from Sydney AustraliaThis isn't about the American city, but rather the arrival of 4 talented Australian media people in Newport Pagnell on May 2nd. They were the Group Sudy Exchange (GSE) team from District 9680, Sydney, Australia. It's fair to say that a tradition when the  visiting team arrives in the MK area, to have a club meeting night visit to Newport Pagnell Rotary Club. Guests join from other local clubs in the historic Swan Revived, and from the Brickhills it was President Elizabeth, Andrew, Lesley and Andy F.

The host President John welcomed everyone and then after a good meal, the team's presentation. The Rotary team leader, Mark Wallace, said he had brought his team together on a serious theme - Rotary's "this close" to ending polio, and it's media people who should get to know Rotary so they know that Rotarians have led the effort. So, the job of the team of 4 was to learn about Rotary from visiting our district, as well as the main goal of learning their profession in our setting.

The team all spoke very well, and told how they had been given to some great opportunities to meet UK media people from both traditional print to the new social media. GSE is like no other trip, it's where Rotarians bring you into their homes and use contacts to make great chances to learn. The team were full of thanks for their host families and for being able to see some great English places - even if it was freezing and rainy compared to back home.

The team would go on to our district conference in Torquay a few days later, and left for home a week later. They'll be remembered as a great team. It was really good to meet them and hear them speak. They are :

  • Mark Wallace (team leader), editor of Rotary Down Under
  • Claire Thompson, media advisor, Hills Shire Council
  • Julia Holman, rural reporter, ABC
  • Louise Schwartzkoff, feature writer, Sydney Morning Herald
  • Steven Spierings, journalist, Hills News
